I explained it was a multisport event and covered off the various disciplines - road biking, kayaking, running and mountainbiking so she could get the gist of what was happening.
Turns out she was French - not from France but Tahiti but spoke very good english - much better than my school boy french. We chatted for about 15 minutes - very charming, friendly woman.
Anyway it turns out it was her third trip to New Zealand - she loves the country - "people are so kind and friendly and make you so welcome" she said - 'its a very easy place to visit and you want to come back". She was here with her boyfriend showing him around.
We frequently ask our guests why they chose New Zealand as a destination to visit and if at the end of their journey had it measured up to their expectations??
Their answers are humbling - nature everywhere, your lack of population, stunning scenery, everyone is so friendly, you have everything in one country - we have seen bits in various countries but you have to visit so many to get what you have here on your door step, your cafes, great food and coffee is great and nothing seems a problem in relation to dairy free, gluten free etc.... the list goes on.
Did New Zealand measure up to their expectations ? In most if not all cases expectation was exceeded - people are blown away with many planning to return in the future.
Made me realise sometimes we forget how great a country we live in and for those of us lucky enough to live in Waihi beach - what a great little piece of paradise we live in!
